Red brick dust is powdered down from red clay bricks, and its use in hoodoo is local to the French occupied areas of the South of the USA, although its use has spread as the practice of hoodoo has become more well known and widespread. The brick dust is also known by the name of 'reddening', and it has two separate and unrelated uses which to some extend depends upon the construction of the building the brick dust is being used in relation to.
In the area around the Mississippi river, red clay bricks were an extremely common building material in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This is due to the ready supply of the local clay, which was red in colour when fired. When hoodoo was really coalescing into a tradition which was more urban and less rural, around the beginning of the 20th century, commercial manufacture of red bricks was stepping up too. From the home made bricks of early 19th century houses to the smaller, standardised, industrially produced bricks of the early 20th century, there is a tradition of red brick being associated with strong walls. When urbanised hoodoo came together with commercial districts full of brick buildings in cities along the river, such as New Orleans and St Louis, red brick became associated with business and shop fronts as well.
As there are two associations with red brick, the red brick dust is used in two different ways. Firstly, because of its association with strength and strong walls, the dust is used for protection. There is also an association with the law (possibly because jails were also built with red brick), so red brick dust is often used in spells where one is specifically attempting to protect their home or business from the police. This is an example of a smaller or derivative item having the effect of a much larger item, one of the key concepts underpinning this system of folk magic.
One of the other key concepts is like attracting like. In this way, red brick dust can be used to attract people to a red brick building. More specifically, it is used to attract customers to a place of business which operates from within a red brick building. When used this way, the dust is always mixed with a sweetening and a money or business drawing component. It is always deployed as a scrub, inwards from the street into the doorway to get the customers inside and in the mood to spend.
Kiwi Mojo use brick reclaimed from demolition sites to make our red brick dust. This way, we know our bricks were part of a strong wall, and we are contributing to the care of our environment by keeping the bricks we use out of landfill. When you buy red brick dust from us, you are contributing to our recycling efforts and our service to our community.
For a simple home protection work, scrub clean your doorstep with holy water or salt water, and sprinkle a small unbroken line of red brick dust across the threshold. This will prevent any unwanted people from entering your home, as it creates a barrier against their entrance. If you wish, you can do this for your windowsills too.
